Chapter Thirteen

Shane

“Hey old man,” I said into my phone as I pulled into a spot behind the alpha’s mansion. “Are you busy?”

“Son, I haven’t been busy in over a decade. What’s goin’ on?”

I smiled at my dad’s humor, but deep inside, I hated how brittle his voice sounded. Had he really aged so much in the two years I’d been away from home?

With a shake of my head, I tried to ignore those thoughts. “Uh,” I said as I glanced around, hoping no one was nearby. “I just wanted to see how you and Mama are doin’,” I lied.

“Cut the crap, Shane.”

A laugh burst out of me, and I shook my head. The man might be getting older, but his mind was as sharp as ever. And his bullshit radar was as sensitive as always.

“Okay,” I said with a sigh. “There’s this girl.”

“It’s always a girl.”

“Yeah, Pops, but this one’s different.” I paused for a moment to collect my thoughts. I hadn’t said this out loud yet, and now I was almost afraid to admit it. Like saying it made things more real somehow.

“What is it, Sonny?”

The use of his childhood nickname for me was enough to settle some of the tension in my gut. I blew out a deep breath and said, “I think we’re fated.”

Silence fell between us for a moment before my dad broke it.

“That’s amazing news! Congratulations!”

My lips twitched with a smile until I remembered our situation. “Yeah, thanks, but it’s not really a good thing.”

“How could it ever not be a good thing?” he asked, his voice rising.

As a man who’d lived with his own fated mate for over fifty years, it must be hard for him to grasp how that connection between two wolves could ever be bad. But he hadn’t heard who I was fated to yet.

“Well,” I said as I reached up and scratched the back of my head. “Turns out, she’s not exactly available.”

“Shane,” Pops said, the warning clear in his thin voice.

I huffed. “It’s not like that either.”

“Then why don’t you tell me what it’s like instead of beatin’ around the daggum bush?” he yelled over me.

I bit my lip to hold back a laugh as I checked the surrounding area to make sure I was still alone. “Calm down, old man, you’ll have a heart attack.”

“Never mind my heart. What’s goin’ on with you?”

I sighed. “She’s the alpha’s daughter,” I bit out.

Pops was quiet again. I counted to three hundred before he finally spoke.

“Does she know?” he asked.

I blew out a deep breath and shook my head. “I mean, she knows she likes me, she knows we’ve got this insane connection.”

“But does she know you’re fated?”

“No,” I grit out. “She doesn’t. What’s the point of telling her?”

“Shane, she’s got a right to know somethin’ like that!”

“She’s arranged to mate another man next weekend and move to Savannah with him!” I yelled. “She’ll be gone, and there’s nothing I can do about it!”

Those words were harder to say than I’d thought they would be, and it took me a minute to find my voice again.
